We can help you choose

The wearing of badly fitting footwear can have a major effect on the foot. So choosing the correct shoes is extremely important if you suffer with foot problems. Nearly everyone is born with perfect feet, and yet by the age of 20, most of us have developed a foot ailment of some kind. The majority of these foot ailments are caused by ill-fitting footwear. Remember we are here to help, when you visit our local Scholl feel free to browse and remember we are happy to talk to you and share what we have learnt

Understanding your feet

Our feet have a complex, strong structure, but they are also very delicate and sensitive the foot is made up of 26 bones, skilfully arranged to form a series of arches, which are supported by ligaments, muscles and tendons. The bones in the foot do not fully set until the age of 18 therefore, shoes worn as a child are vital to future foot health. Adult feet, however, can still be damaged, by wearing the wrong shoes.

The right footwear is essential for healthy feet. Good footwear not only protects the feet but also provides support and comfort.

When you try on a new pair of shoes, make sure you stand up and walk in them. As soon as you stand, your feet spread.

Shoes that felt comfortable whilst sitting down could therefore hurt when you walk.

If the shoe fits

A well fitting shoe should be half an inch longer than your foot, with plenty of room for your toes to move. It should fit snugly at the heel and in-step and be wide enough to prevent squashing from side to side or rubbing. The depth of the shoe should be deep enough so the toes do not push against the upper of the shoe. Scholl Footcare Advisors are all trained at fitting footwear.

What makes a good shoe?

The upper should preferable be made of soft, supple leather or fabric that allows your feet to breathe. The sole should be light, pliable and hardwearing with- a suitable tread. The lining of the shoe should be smooth with no rough or obstructive stitching and finally a good shoe should look great!

Simple tips when choosing footwear

  • Buy footwear in mid-afternoon when your feet are at their largest. Choose a style which suits your foot shape (do not force your feet into ill-fitting shoes).
  • Ensure that the width fitting is correct - not just the length.
  • If you slip out of a shoe it may be the width and not the length which is incorrect.
  • Try to choose footwear which is adjustable to provide greatest all-round comfort at all times.
  • Low - heeled shoes are healthier - keep those stilettos for the discos! Stilettos force the foot into an unnatural position where weight-bearing is on the ball of the foot. This throws the body out of its natural alignment and can lead to back and neck problems.
